BURRELL SPECIAL SCENIC FEATURES AND SPECIFICATION
COMPOUND DOUBLE CYLINDER BLOCK - 6.75 in. x 11.5 in. x 12 in.
The compound cylinder block was a single casting with an integral saddle attachment to the boiler barrel by means of taper headed bolts. The high pressure (HP) cylinder (the smaller one) was always on the gear side of the engine. The two cylinders were at 10.25 in. centres. The centre line of the HP cylinder was directly above the boiler centre line, the offset of the LP cylinder was provided for by the outward set in the flywheel side hornplate. Steam entered the cylinder block directly from the boiler and passed through cored passages to the slide valves mounted on the outside.
SCENIC ENGINE BOILER CONSTRUCTION
The Scenic boiler - note the offset on the flywheel side hornplate.
By 1920 only the best quality steel plate was being used for Burrell boiler construction. Boilers were rolled at the Thetford works and shell seams were double riveted for maximum strength. A 3" wide foundation ring was incorporated giving good water space around the firebox which had a grate area id 6.6 sq ft. The maximum steam demand was when the Scenic engine was generating so a long grate was employed compared with the Contractors type Burrell engine (which were designed for continuous road haulage.
